Influenza and pneumococcal vaccination coverage among persons aged >= 65 years and persons aged 18-64 years with diabetes or asthma- United States, 2003

Article Abstract:

CDC conducted a 2003 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), a state-based random-digit-dialed telephone survey of the U.S. civilian, noninstitutionalized population aged greater than equal to 18 years to estimate influenza and pneumococcal vaccination coverage. The survey reported an increase in influenza and pneumooccal vaccination coverage from the majority of areas from 2002 to 2003 among adults aged greater than equal to 65 years.

Brain scans, genes provide addiction clues

Article Abstract:

The research work on brain imaging and genetic testing to probe the physiological basis of addiction revealed the importance of memory and drug-related clues in addiction. The roles of monoamineoxidase-inhibiting compounds in cigarette smoking, the damage to inhibitory controls caused by methamphetamine use, and the results from studies, suggest that genomics could be used to better change addiction therapies.

Trends in Injection Drug Use Among Persons Entering Addiction Treatment--New Jersey, 1992-1999

Article Abstract:

The number of New Jersey residents who inject heroin has increased since 1995, and most of the increase is in young suburban and rural residents. Intravenous drug use is a risk factor for hepatitis B and C, as well as HIV infection.
